Cyanide is not exceptional as regards the amount needed to kill you: 200mg (0.2grams) is the accepted oral lethal dose for an average sized man. There are hundreds of other poisons which are more toxic, Arsenic Oxide and Strychnine being just two common examples. However, what makes cyanide so notorious is the speed with which it acts. Cyanides are amoungst the most fast acting poisons known, mainly sodium cyanide and potassium cyanide as well as hydrogen cyanide.

As a hypothetical example, if you wanted to kill yourself, you wouldn't bother weighing out the toxic dose: you could just get a teaspoon full and dissolve it in water and swallow it down. A rounded teaspoon of potassium cyanide would be about 50 times the amount needed to kill you.

Upon swallowing such a solution, you would collapse almost immediately and lose consciousness within 10-20 seconds. Death would follow in a matter of minutes.

With such a massive dose taken, any medical assistance, no matter how aggressive, would prove futile.

A gram mixed in with about 4 to 8 oz water would render you unconscious within 15-45 sec (depending on your body) and without medical attention you would be dead within 30-45 min.

When potassium ferro cyanide and ferric ammonium combine it turns Prussian blue?

Probably, depending on the thermodynamics, I would assume that the ammonia goes into solution as an ion as does the potassium. Looking at the Wikipedia article, the formula for Ferric Hexacyanoferrate is Fe7(CN)18(H2O)x. Again. It depends on the thermodynamics of each solution. If the Energy to c (MORE)

How does the poison potassium cyanide kill a person?

Answer: Cyanide blocks one of the enzymes involved in the electron transfer chain, this ceases cellular respiration thus you essentially die from suffocation. You would pass out fairly rapidly then die as your heart muscle has no energy to beat. You know that inhalation of hydrogen cyanide, or (MORE)

Is suicide by potassium cyanide painful?

Nothing to play around with. This was used in legal executions in California. Pellets of the deadly stuff were dissolved in Battery acid underneath the seats of the death chamber. it"s l0:l5- start the first charge!

What is potassium cyanide?

Potassium cyanide is the inorganic compound with the formula KCN. This colorless crystalline compound, similar in appearance to sugar , is highly soluble in water. The vast majority of KCN is used in gold mining followed by use in organic synthesis , and electroplating. Smaller applicat (MORE)

How does Hydrogen Cyanide kill you?

Cyanide ions in the Hydrogen cyanide interfere with iron-containing respiratory enzymes in your body which can kill you in 10 to 20 seconds! From Sam (Hoped this helped!) :P

How much cyanide would kill an elephant?

About 150mg of cyanide can kill a 60kg human so about 15g shouldkill a 6000 kg adult male elephant. The cyanide would kill theelephant in much the same way it kills humans because we are bothmammals.

How is potassium cyanide made?

Industrially it's usually made by reacting prussic acid (hydrogen cyanide) with potassium hydroxide.. That won't help you if you're planning to make it yourself, since the usual laboratory preparation for hydrogen cyanide is the reaction of a strong acid with a cyanide salt, such as potassium cyani (MORE)

What is the taste of Potassium cyanide?

Potassium cyanide is basic in nature because on hydrolysis it forms a strong base KOH and weak acid HCN. Since HCN is a gas at room temperature, it will evolve and solution will have more KOH and thus be bitter. Apparently it has the taste of Almonds and is highly toxic. The related link supplies m (MORE)

Can potassium kill you?

In large enough amounts, yes. The United States and a few othercountries use a massive dose of potassium chloride to carry outexecutions by lethal injection. Elemental potassium can also be deadly. It will react explosivelywith water, setting itself on fire and producing caustic potassiumhydroxide.

How does cyanide kill people?

Cyanide kills by blocking a key enzyme in the mitochondria, stopping cellular respiration. This leaves the cells unable to produce energy.

How much potassium would kill you?

The normal body blood stream has 3.2 - 5.7 milliequelovents of potassium too much potassium over 6 (ie. Eating 9 or more bananas in one sitting) will form a water sac around your heart and will cause cardiac arrest

How does potassium cyanide cause death?

In respiration, the enzyme cytochrome 'c' oxidase present in the blood binds oxygen and transfers electrons to oxygen, converting it to water and simultaneously brings about the oxidation of ferrocytochrome 'c' to ferricytochrome 'c'. When the cyanide ion of potassium cyanide enters the bloodstream, (MORE)

How poisonous is potassium cyanide?

Symbol KCN?. Because of the presence of the CN-, and the high reactivity of K+, it is in my option that it would be HIGHLY poisonous.. I would not in any way suggest ingestion...but hey, if you can find someone who has survived it...ask them

How fast will sodium cyanide kill a person?

"Once more than 100-200 mg of sodium cyanide is consumed, consciousness is lost within one minute, sometimes within 10 seconds, depending on the strength of the body's immunity and the amount of food present in the stomach. After a span of about 45 minutes, the body goes into a state of coma or deep (MORE)

What will happen if you drink potassium cyanide?

Let's clear one thing up first: potassium cyanide is a solid (powder). At room temperature, in its pure form, it can't be drunk. Of course, one can take a tablespoon of potassium cyanide and dissolve it in a glass of water, THEN drink the resulting solution. The result would be a quick DEATH, becau (MORE)

Potassium hydroxide what does it kill?

Depends on the method of contact. KOH (potassium hydroxide) is known by a variety of names, such as lye or potash (though lye can also refer to sodium hydroxide). It is one of the strongest bases stable in water, and is often used for its basicity and nucleophilicity in all forms of chemistry. In (MORE)

Why is potassium Ferricyanide less poisonous than potassium cyanide?

Cyanide is highly poisonous because it binds irreversibly to the iron in the haemoglobin of the red blood cells, preventing them from transporting oxygen. In the ferricyanide, the cyanide ligands are already bonded strongly to an iron atom, so are not as freely able to bond to haemoglobin if they en (MORE)

How does potassium Chloride kill someone?

Potassium chloride interferes with the electrical signals that nerves give off. When it reaches the hard it interferes with the signals that 'tell' the heart to beat and therefore causes cardiac arrest by stopping the heart.

Is cyanide a poison in cigarettes that can kill you?

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) was identified in cigarettes smoke but very probably the concentration is not important for health. Far more significant is the nicotine content of cigarettes. Nicotine is a deadlier posion (by ld50) and is also addictive.

How long does one last after consuming potassium cyanide?

It depends on the dose. It is an extreme poison. Death could be within minutes with some doses, or a few hours in other doses and individuals.
