Answer . In general, any antioxidant such as vitamin A, C, E or coenzyme-Q10 can be referred to as "anti-inflamatory". However, whether such basic biological properties translate into real benefits in people has shown mixed results in controlled studies involving supplementation. Supplements are… no replacement for antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. (MORE)
No. The above answer is outdated. The following is a summary of the conclusions of a study reported in the Journal of Neuroinflammation, vol 6, 2009: "Conclusion These data show that acetaminophen has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects on neurons and suggest a heretofore unappreci…ated therapeutic potential for this drug in neurodegenerative diseases such as AD [Alzheimer's Disease] that are characterized by oxidant and inflammatory stress." No it is not. Vicodin contains Tylenol and hydrocodone. Neither of these is an anti-inflammatory.
"Painkiller" is a very generic term for any medication which can act to relieve pain. Anti-inflammatories can be in that category. Anti-inflammatories, on the other hand, are medications which work by decreasing the inflammatory response which is causing pain, usually by working on prostaglandins…. Anti-inflammatories include aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Aleve), Naproxen (Aleve), Toradol, Mobic, Diclofenac, etc.. Other types of painkillers beside anti-inflammatories are simple analgesics like Tylenol, or opiate medications like codeine, oxycodone (Percocet = Tylenol + oxycodone), or morphine. Opiate medications work by attaching to the opioid receptors of the brain, where they interefere with and stop the transmission of pain signals to the rest of the body. They also can produce feelings where you are aware of the pain still being there, but you don't really care as much. Pain specialists have now also found that there are other medications which can be used to treat chronic pain. Neurontin, Lyrica, Topamax, Zonegran (all primarily anti-seizure meds) - have proven useful for pain, especially nerve pain, as well as tricyclic antidepressants and SNRIs like Cymbalta. (MORE)

There are a variety of herbal and plant-based "natural remedies" touted for dogs, but none of them are really known to do any good. Diets rich in vegetables and fruits help prevent unnecessary inflammation. Top anti-inflammatory foods include: . Vegetables . Lightly cooked organic dark leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables (kale, collards, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower), carrots, beets, onions, peas, squash…es, and washed raw salad greens are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components. . Kelp such as kombu contains fucoidan, a type of complex carbohydrate that is anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and anti-oxidative. The high fiber content of kelp also slows fat absorption and promotes weight loss. But whenever possible, get only organic kelps harvested from unpolluted sea. Besides kombu, wakame, arame, and limu moui are also good sources of fucoidan. . Fruits . Brightly colored fruits, especially berries, peaches, nectarines, oranges, pink grapefruit, red grapes, plums, pomegranates, cherries, apples and pears, provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory flavonoids and carotenoids. . Legumes . Legumes are a low-glycemic-index food rich in folate, magnesium, potassium and soluble fiber. Tofu, tempeh, edamame, soy nuts and soy milk provide isoflavones that have antioxidant activity and are protective against cancer. . Essential fats . Eat five to seven servings per day of omega-3 fatty acids and healthy fats from foods like nuts, flax seeds, chia seeds, algae, and phytoplankton. Flax seeds are loaded with alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA, an essential omega-3 fatty acid with strong anti-inflammatory effects. ALA is also found in walnuts, soy products, wheat germ, vegetables, fruits, and beans. A second natural fatty acid, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), is found in evening primrose, borage, black currant, and hemp. Vitamin E protects against oxidation of these fatty acids. . Cooked Mushrooms . Cooked mushrooms such as shiitake, enokidake, maitake, and oyster mushrooms contain compounds that help enhance immune function. . Spices . Add spices generously to each meal for their anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric, ginger, hot red peppers, ginseng, and garlic are all great choices. Curcumin, the yellow pigment in the curry spice turmeric is far safer and more effective than drugs in reducing inflamation. . Tea . White, green, and oolong teas, which provide catechins, antioxidant compounds that reduce inflammation. . Dark chocolate . (70 percent cocoa and higher) eaten sparingly, offers antioxidant benefits. Ibuprofen (Motrin) is an anti-inflamatory drug that works by inhibiting the COX enzyme which converts arachindonic acid into the prostoglandin, PGH2. The effect is probably most active in inflamatory immune cells such as mast cells, granulocytes, and macrophages. This serves to reduce inflamation, f…ever, and lethargy. Other chemical mediators of inflmation that Motrin does not work on are Interleukin-1 and TNF-g. For more information visit the Related Link. (MORE)
New research shows that one of the cannabinoid found in marijuana is an anti-inflammatory that doesn't have the side effect of getting you high. THC also combats inflammation, but that's the stuff that gets you high. However, experiments at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology showed that anoth…er cannabis compound, (E)-BCP (beta-caryophyllene), is also an anti-inflammatory but doesn't affect the molecular receptor that makes you feel stoned. Instead it activates only the CB2 receptor which plays a key role in alleviating inflammation. (MORE)

Anti-Inflammatory medications help to reduce pain by reducing the amount of edema (swelling) present in the injured area. When swelling is reduced it allows for the muscles around to become less tight which therefore increased blood flow. This allows for the healing process to begin and start taking… a rapid pace. Ibuprophen 800mg is a good anti-inflammatory. The brand name of the prescription is Motrin. You can also take 4 over-the-counter Ibuprophen 200mg from Walgreens and it's exactly the same thing. Ibuprophen is one of the most effective anti inflammatory medicines you can take. I have had it via prescr…iption, because the copay with my prescription insurance is cheaper (than buying it over-the-counter) and taking one 800mg tablet is more appealing than taking 4 of the over the counter kind. Yes, but one must be careful to select an anti-inflammatory that will not injure the cat. In particular, aspirin and ibuprofen, which are anti-inflammatories for humans, will kill a cat, because cats have a metabolic pathway that causes these drugs to release cyanide. The usual anti-inflammatory use…d for cats is prednisone, though there are reports of better results from Thalidomide -- though of course this should never be used on pregnant queens. (MORE)
